Matera is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, with a history going back over 9,000 years. Even though it’s in Basilicata, not Puglia, it’s a popular stop for visitors to the region.
You have to check out the "Sassi di Matera", these incredible cave dwellings carved into limestone. People lived in them until the 1950s, and now they’re a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Don’t miss the "Matera Cathedral", which offers stunning views of the Sassi from up high.
